Recently featuring in an episode of the BBC’s Antiques Road Trip programme appears to have increased the amount of interest in the 10th March antique auction of local auctioneers Nigel Ward & Co at their Pontrilas Saleroom.

The illustrated pair of Chinese double gourd blue and white vases 16” tall sold for £3,200. An extremely life-like oil painting of a Lion and Lioness signed Arthur Wardle realised £2,500, an unframed Thomas Faed oil of a gentleman reading to his family by candlelight made £1,900, a striking oil portrait of a young lady attributed to William Etty £1,150 and a French School framed oil of a lady and her son at the foot of a stately home staircase £520. Of the greatly varied selection of miscellanea, a carved wood tribal headrest sold for £1,050, a very cute silver caddy spoon in the form of a Rabbit, it’s ears forming the handle made £750 probably as a result of it’s maker being the renowned silversmith Henry George Murphy, a Persian Kashan carpet made £550, Turkish Silk rugs sold to £460, an early, distressed but much loved 18” tall Teddy Bear, very unusually of red Mohair also made £460. In the jewellery section, 9ct gold watch chains made £570 and £415 and a 9ct gold J.W. Benson half-hunter pocket watch £420. Quality, practical furniture was in demand with a late Georgian bookcase on chest of considerable elegance making £420, surprisingly being exceeded in the price stakes by a very high quality modern two-seater sofa at £485.

Some 470 buyers registered to bid and the sale of 2,383 lots was concluded at 7.04p.m.
